Early Literacy Course for Kindergarten and First Grade

With uncertainty and uneasiness about the upcoming school year, many families are choosing to homeschool their children. Many parents would still prefer a knowledgeable and experienced educator to work with their child on the most important element of early elementary school: literacy.

I am a nationally certified academic language therapist. I am licensed by the state of Colorado as a reading specialist. In addition, I have teaching credentials in elementary and special education. I am a highly trained expert in teaching children to read. At the READ Center, I have focused on working with students with dyslexia. However, in response to the current need in the community, I am expanding my services to teach kindergarten and first-grade literacy. Every lesson would be informed by the science of reading, a vast accumulation of research-based information in how the brain learns to read, and my experience teaching children how to read.

Lessons are conducted one-on-one. (Under special circumstances, I would teach a pair of students together. In this case, it would need to be an agreement between two families who are familiar with each other requesting their children be seen together.) As a therapist, I am able to respond to your child’s unique needs. This means we go as fast as we can, but as slowly as we need to. The most important thing in literacy is to build a strong base. Unfortunately, many students get to 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grade and suddenly it becomes apparent that they are not strong readers. My prescriptive method of teaching can help avoid this. I will be acutely aware if there are red flags indicating a possible reading difficulty such as dyslexia.

While a four day a week program would be ideal and move the student along the most efficiently, it may not be feasible for all families. The minimum commitment is two classes per week. Homework would be sent home for the days the student is not in class. This would be individualized for your child and give them a solid start on their journey as readers.

Application deadlines are listed below. There is very limited availability and the course openings may be filled before the application deadlines.
