I began my career in education as an elementary special education teacher in a resource room setting. It very quickly became apparent that the majority of my students were entering special education due to difficulties in reading. I was fortunate that when I was working on my master's degree in special education from UCCS it was accredited by the International Dyslexia Association (it no longer holds that accreditation). While my education at UCCS, primarily under Dr. Elaine Cheesman, prepared me more than most special education teachers to work with students with dyslexia, I wanted to do more for my students. This led me to Colorado College and the Master of Arts in Teaching~Literacy Intervention program. (They have since renamed this program the Master of Arts in Teaching~Dyslexia Specialist program.)

Through Colorado College and the Colorado Learning and Literacy Center, I earned not just my master's degree but also completed my supervised practicum. These accomplishments prepared me for the national competency exam and to earn my certification as a Certified Academic Language Therapist. As my role in the public school evolved much more into a behavioral-focused position, I started my own private dyslexia therapy practice in order to commit 100% of my efforts to children with dyslexia.
