Academic Language Therapist

Certified Academic Language Therapists provide diagnostic, explicit, systematic multisensory structured language intervention which builds a high degree of accuracy, knowledge, and independence for students with written-language disorders, including dyslexia.

ALTA Requirements

My ALTA certification training was completed at Colorado College in conjunction with the Colorado Literacy and Learning Center under the guidance of Dr. Lynne Fitzhugh.

Comprehensive Therapy-Level Training

  • minimum of 200 instructional hours

  • minimum of 700 clinical/teaching practicum hours in a minimum of 3 teaching situations 

  • minimum of 10 demonstrations

ALTA Competency Exam - Therapy Level

The ALTA Competency Exam for Multisensory Structured Language Education measures an individual’s knowledge of and skills in Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE) and verifies that the individual has achieved the highest level of competency in the field of dyslexia education.

Continuing Education

In order to promote the most current, competent methods and standards of practice, ALTA requires a minimum of ten continuing education hours annually to maintain professional certification. 

Master's Degree

The requirement for a master's degree will begin in 2023. I held a master's degree before beginning my ALTA training and received a second master's degree upon completing the Colorado College program.
